This cold and wet May two four weekend ushered in a brand new camping season.

Following on our new (from last year’s) tradition of exploring the less known parks, we pitched our expedition sized tent at Charleston Lake Provincial Park, about 1.5 hours southwest of Ottawa.

The park has friendly and enthusiastic staff, well-maintained (but crowded) campsites, and fantastic hiking along its 7 hiking trails.

The park also offers canoe and kayak rental, for that quintessential Canadian camping experience.

We also met and heard two of its resident owls. I’m pretty sure that it was I who summoned them with my excellent owl call imitations.

With each new camping season, we all take the time to step out of our comfort zone.

  • That Guy sported a caterpillar accessory on his shoulder for most of the drive home.
  • The Tiger Princess took on a new persona playing the “Guess Who” game.
  • The Dragon ended up with the biggest mosquito bites anyone has ever seen.
  • I went unplugged for the entire weekend.
